Why plant-based?

Animals are someone, not something.

Animals are individuals with emotions, personalities and a will to live. They experience the world from their own perspective. Their lives matter to them just as ours matter to us. Ask yourself the following questions.

Are animals individuals?

Animals are not products or numbers. They have their own character, their own body and their own experience of the world. That makes their lives important to them.

  • Each one has their own personality.
  • They experience the world in their own way.
  • They experience emotions such as sadness, happiness and fear.
Reason 1 The animals we eat are individuals, just like our companion animals — with lives of their own that matter to them.

Do animals deserve rights?

Animals matter and deserve basic rights. We protect people through such rights, and we also give animals such as dogs and cats significant protection. Why should we deny that protection to other animals?

  • The right not to be killed.
  • The right not to be treated as property.
  • The right to live in a natural way.
Reason 2 Anyone with a life of their own deserves basic rights — such as the right not to be killed or treated as property.

Taste or their lives?

Animal products give us only a brief moment of enjoyment. For the animal, they mean the end of an entire life. Plant-based options can be delicious too.

  • Is our taste more important than the life of a pig who is gassed?
  • Would you personally behead a lamb at a barbecue?
  • Would you turn on a blender with a live chick inside just for an egg?
Reason 3 Taste is not a good reason to take an animal’s life.

Convenience or their lives?

Choosing plant-based sometimes takes a little extra effort: buying something different, reading a label or trying a new recipe. For animals, that small effort makes a world of difference.

  • Is the small effort of finding a restaurant with vegan options more important than an animal’s life?
  • Is spending a little more time thinking about what you eat more important than an animal’s life?
  • Is the convenience of buying the same groceries as always more important than an animal’s life?
Reason 4 Convenience is not a good reason to take an animal’s life.

Animals.

We see animals as products. We use them for food, clothing and entertainment. But animals are fascinating individuals. They communicate, explore, play, feel and form bonds. They deserve our protection.

Animal suffering.

Meat, dairy, eggs, fish and other animal products cause animal suffering. This includes fear, confinement, pain, stress and a terrible death. By choosing plant-based, you no longer contribute to that suffering. And that feels good.

This has to stop.

The number of animals we kill is almost impossible to comprehend. Every single one is an individual. Each animal has their own personality, emotions, a unique experience of the world and a will to live. The counter below shows how many animals have been killed since you opened this page. Choose plant-based so that you no longer contribute to this number. Together, we can make the world a little kinder and more animal-friendly.

Land animals 0
Fish 0

The land-animal counter is an estimate based on the approximately 88 billion land animals killed each year (Our World in Data). The fish counter is based on an estimate of 1.6 trillion fish — 1 trillion equals 1,000 billion — caught from the wild each year (scientific article). Fish killed in aquaculture and victims of bycatch are not even included in this estimate.

Choose animals.

Every animal wants to live. By choosing plant-based, you choose to take their lives seriously. Not later, but today.
